Builders: Your fave replacement OT for JTM45 RI?

Postby B-Squared on Thu Aug 30, 2007 7:15 pm

Hey guys--I'm rapidly coming to the point where I have to decide what OT to put in this baby. I'm using KT-66 tubes (ValveArt, can't afford the GEC), and for now am sticking with the PCB.

What's you favorite replacement OT? I'm looking for the classic JTM sound, and will augment for anything heavier (if needed) with pedals.

Thanks!

BB
I use Punky McGoo's pickups...and Grundy MacTavich's electronics in my guitars. :D
I also use some Bardledoo caps, and like what I hear. ;)

Marstran he just put more effort into coping the old tone then others have. The prices are good too.

I like the sound clips provided on the site...very nice tone.
Nice price, as well.

Mercury Magnetics Radio Spares JTM-45 o/p. Best I've heard and yes, I have heard the Marstran. I think the Mercury is more open and harmonically richer.
BTW, Mercury now owns the Trademark for the names "Radio Spares" & "RS".

Hi Guys,

I've received my PTP board from Metro the other day for my RI Bluesbreaker. I also purchased a Drake - thought that the MMagenetics was a bit expensive..

As the Bluesbreaker and the JTM are "similar" has anyone got any experience with the Drake?

Thanks
R

They'd have a hard time doing that considering RS still trades in the UK

I believe that the OT in the JTM45RI is a Drake 784-389 as stock.

You have done well if you have managed to get an original 60's Drake 784 103.

I have a Mercury Magnetics Axiom O45JT-16 in my clone, and was not the tonal revelation I expected. To be fair it was the one with 4/8/16ohm and 100v tap and is no longer listed so more recent offerings may be better.

Had happy dealings with Marstran nice 50 watt tranny, not tried the JTM45 version.
All bleeding stops.......eventually.

they don't use the "Radio Spares" logo anymore. It's simply RS Components".
Mercury was granted the Radio Spares and RS Trademarks in the U.S. They might have a bit of trouble in the U.K.

LD50 said, "not the tonal revelation I expected." I appreciate that kind of honesty. While I haven't done a transformer swap with my JTM45RI, I have done many things with amps and guitars over the years. What I think I do is comment on websites when it's a positive, and if it's a negative change I don't say anything. I think we all like to believe in what we're doing. In the spirit of LD50's honest comments, in a few days I'll receive my bias-rite stuff and Shuagang KT66's and I promise to shrug my shoulders if that's all they do for my amp. :?

Has anyone gone from the stock tranny to an aftermarket and been blown away by the differences?

Try asking over at Metroamp. The guys there have done mods on reissues and will be able to tell you the differnce. Brian Wallace will tell you there is a big difference with aftermarket trannies but then again he owns the Marstran site  I would say getting KT66s in the amp along with some nice sozo signal caps, proper filtering and a new OT, you be just about spot on for JTM 45 tone.

Chris Merren (Cerrem on this and other boards) has provided transformers for several of my amps, including a JTM45 repro. Chris is very knowledgeable and makes excellent transformers.
