Grampian amplifiers

Postby shellac7 on Fri Jan 29, 2010 4:42 pm

Hi all, I'm newly registered - I have a small collection of very cool amps including three fairly obscure Grampians - two Ensa Festival PA sets (the packaway two-speaker-plus-amp variety, early 60s, colourful vynide covered, one valves & one transistors) and a Vibromajor which I bought in a horrific state but is now utterly wonderful - amongst other things, as I read Telharmonium did, I painstakingly found an original speaker (what a monster) and got it re-coned.

Just wanted to connect with a few like-minded peeps and pick up any other snippets of info to be had.

Other amps are a mid 50s Selmer Truvoice TV10 (unusual design not shown on the vintage Hofner/Selmer site) and a little American Airline 'picture frame', model 9002 if memory serves.

Would be great to hear back from anyone interested in Grampians especially. I have a serious soft spot for their stuff - also have a number of mics.

Welcome to the forum!
It's nice to see new people here and learn about their interests and acquisitions. Here's a tidbit on the GRAMPIAN's maybe you can elaborate more and also show us what you have!

Grampian Reproducers Ltd, of Hanworth Trading Estate, Feltham, Middlesex, traded primarily in PA equipment from c.1950 to c.1975. Like Elpico, they made some small amplifiers to amplify record decks and tape recorders which could be used by guitar players, and the Vibromajor which was a guitar amp. The two-tone grey/blue finish suggests that they were made in the mid-late 1950s and early 1960s at which time most amp manufacturers used similar colour schemes.

There was a Grampian Reverb Unit on eBay recently and I believe it sold w/out any bids...

Yes, a blue hammer-finish Grampian amp just sold for over £80. Identical to the one in the later of my Ensa Festival PA sets, the transistor one. Must dig the earlier one out and get it looked at.

Another point of interest - Grampian go back at least to the 30s - one website credits them with making the first moving coil microphone.

Here's a link to the Grampian Reverb Unit that I mentioned in my earlier post since it's back up on eBay;

Unbelievable price on that Grampian reverb unit, I'm speechless...

Meanwhile there are now photos of my Vibromajor on the vintage Hofner/Selmer etc website (nice to help Steve out), also my Selmer Truvoice TV-10 which is different to any of the others.
