White Noise When Powering On

Postby Jamie on Wed Jan 25, 2017 11:42 pm

I've noticed this over the years on a few different amps randomly, it comes and goes. Coming off of standby and powering down I get white noise / hissing momentarily sometimes mixed with static. Mostly during the winter months. Room temp is always around mid to high 60s and very dry. Also these amps might not be turned on for at least a month for maybe 15 - 30 minutes to keep caps healthy. One amp in particular I'm going to open up and check the tubes and bias soon. Any ideas much appreciated.

Some amps are fitted with a DPDT so that when you throw the off switch, the power is drained from the caps and shunted to ground. Maybe it's the sound of a full power supply being drained?

I dunno, I never went from standby to off. Usually I turn it from standby to on, hit an E, and then turn it off and listen to the E chord as it fades away. Gives it a fuzz pedal sound, and plus it drains most of the energy through the speaker.

I'll have to try it with one of my amps and see if I get white noise!

Thanks U1. I think it is the full power being drained but also when turning on. Happens with various amps, mostly during colder months, which is odd. No issues during play. Happens coming off of standby, turning amp on and off. I typically let them warm up a minute or so before coming out of bypass. I'll make an mp3 clip when I get time. I would think if it's a tube issue it would be a consistent issue. Caps are not old, they should be ok.

I attempted to record the issues and wouldn't you know it, no problem surfaced, quiet on and off.

Drives me crazy when I go to debug something and that little bug just hides .. ;) Like reported code issues that can't be replicated..

I turn my amps off the same way.. From operate to off while not switching into standby.. Yes, the draining of the circuit will sound like a bleeding off of electricity... Sssssssss.... This is why I do it this way...Normal..

Thanks Brian, I get that too. But this happens when turning on also, it's different sound than just the caps discharging. It's a random issue that is not always the same amp.
