New VOX AC30/6 TB ?1965?

Postby Charlyx on Mon Mar 04, 2013 8:14 pm

Hi guys,

I'm a brand new forum member, and a bad drummer. :D

I'm here because I have this AC30/6 TB for a couple of years and I decided to check with you specialists about its age, its specs.
I do not plan to keep it as I do not play it at its real value, and if it could make one forum member happy, I would be glad.
If not, I rest my case ;-)

Can someone help me date this one ?
As per my last investigations, it looks like a 1965, but can not be sure. Serial Number is 22551.

Welcome to the forum. I'm a mediocre guitar player who happens to have a set of vintage Ludwigs that I wouldn't dream of selling. Even if you don't play the amp, you shouldn't let vintage electronics sit idle. Plug it in and turn it on for at least a half hour a month to keep the electrolytics fresh (it appears many of them have already been replaced).

The "LX" date codes on your transformers indicate they were manufactured in November 1966 so your amp was likely assembled in late 1966 or early 1967.

My drums aren't anything special to look at. Just a typical early '69 silver sparkle four-piece kit. All of the original hardware was tossed by a friend who stored them for a couple years. I think they record marvelously.

Bonjour Charlyx, faites bon accueil à Vox au forum.

I haven't had chance to check the serial in Jim Elyeas book Vox Amplifiers The JMI Years, which will pin it down to the month but I think early 67 from the 22xxx serial and the speaker code is in the right ball park.

According to Jims book 22551 dates from August 1967. Vox seem to be only producing 50 AC30's per month through 1967, I expect they were pushing the new solid state line at this time.

JIm Elyea (author of Vox Amplifiers: The JMI Years) offers international shipping on his book.

I see you have your amp listed on eBay with a Buy It Now of 5000 Euros ($6490). Unless you're selling an immaculate early fawn amp, that price seems a bit ambitious to me. I would say something a little under half your asking price would be more reasonable for a 1967 model. Good luck.
