Hiwatt 4x12 replacement speaker advice

Postby chard on Mon Mar 20, 2017 11:35 pm

Hi all, I have a 1973 4x12 Hiwatt cab that I bought to match my 1974 DR103. The problem is that the original fane drivers are ruined an uneconomical to repair. Can anyone recommend a suitable modern replacement which is voiced in a similar to the original 50w cast fanes?

I have 1970 SE4122 and one 212 cabinet with Ted Weber FC12 Crescendo and Eminence Tonker. They have the same voicing, although dont have the exact same sound. Crescendo has more clarity and is more for cleans, tonker has that specific fane voicing and very very close to original fanes in my opinion and is better for overdriven sounds. They arent that expensive, so if I got my SE4122 stolen I´d go for Tonkers all the way.

Where are you located?

HI-TONE Amps, at one time, was offering a rebuild service for vintage HIWATT cabinets, including their DR series speakers. Not certain if that is still available but, if you're in the U.S.A., I'd suggest contacting them for details.

...Hey! I played that song when it was new...

Despite the ramblings of some people on the web, the Tonker is actually based on the Celestion G12 100K. It is unlike any 1970's Fane.

HI-TONE can still do the restoration/reload for genuine Dave Reeves era cabs.
HI-TONE, when only the best Dave Reeves HIWATT amplifiers and speaker cabs will do.
