22 watt Fane 122141 question

Postby loins71 on Sun May 21, 2017 9:41 am

These speakers were in my Hiwatt SE4123 when I bought it. They appeared to be retro-fitted as the fixing holes from the previous speakers were visible. I used them for a while with my DR103 and they sounded fine but I was advised not to continue using them due to their low power rating so I replaced them several years ago.
They have remained unused so I'd like to sell them but I'm not quite sure exactly what they are and I can't find a date on them anywhere

Any advice greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

I am pretty sure that these were the "forerunners" of the more ubiquitos 122231 models typically found in SE4123 cabs. IIRC, the 122141 speaker is a 14000 gauss magnet speaker, and was used in SE4121 cabs starting in 1969. SE4122 cabs were introduced at the same time, and were fitted with 122142 speakers, which were more heavy-duty speakers with a 50W rating and 17000 gauss magnet strength.

Fane models had sequential model numbers, so these two speakers were introduced at the same time, and I believe the date is 1969 and they were the first proper "Hiwatt"-speced Fane speakers. The 122142 speakers used in SE4122 cabs remained in production albeit with some small variations over the years, but the lower-powered 122141 speakers and corresponding SE4121 cabs were phased out and replaced with the SE4123 cabs equipped with 50w rated, but 14000 gauss magnet strength 122231 speakers. I am pretty sure this happened in 1971 around the time that Hiwatt also changed the design of their cabs (different baffle mounting, wider and more rounded flange on the front).
