Low Level with Stomps

Postby Spray6969 on Fri Jun 02, 2017 12:21 pm

Hi,

Just get back my SA212 from technician.
Everything seems ok : new capacitors, new power tubes, 1new preamp tube (others are Mullard & have been tested & look OK)

But strange behaviour My tech can't explain : when I add a stompbox FX (like OD or Fuzz) the level is very low & I need to put stomp volume beyond 80%.
So every amp need a litttle tweak about stomps but this time it seems to me a lot...

What do you think ?

I have never experienced that particular behavior with Hiwatts.

Which input(s) are you using? And, did your Tech take any pictures of the input jacks while he was servicing it? If so, please link to them.

Dave

EDIT: Also, have you verified the cords connecting the FX are working correctly?

Hi OldSchoolDave,
Thanks.

I have pictures before service at home, I wil post them later.

I tried every 4 inputs (same behaviour), I I changed cords whit same result.

The thing I would give a try : mounting my Custom50 preamp tube in my SA212 to see what happens.

Do the pedals get loud enough when set above 80%? If so it may just be the control taper used on those particular pedals; try other pedals.

Does the guitar you are using have very loud pickups? Or have some some of active electronic boost?
If so, try a guitar with lower output, eg single coils, to see if that helps.

How clean or overdriven the amps you are comparing are set will affect this too, ie can't directly compare how a overdriven amp reacts to a pedal to how a dead clean amp reacts.

Two of your input jacks have been replaced...and should be replaced (again) with the proper Cliff jacks, wiring & resistors. Here's the input section of the SA212 I used to own:

Until all is set back to original spec, I would not waste time troubleshooting this issue.
