Overdrive vid

Postby lastcaress83 on Mon Mar 31, 2014 8:33 pm

I made a quick clip of a couple of riffs with my Overdrive 120. Not HQ or anything, just off of my phone mic but gives a decent idea of the amps drive tone, gain, and response.

There's not a lot of overdrive vids out on the net so I thought some folks here might be interested. Please forgive the slop, it's been a couple of months since I picked up my electric.

The amp is running two EH 6V6GT's at 20 watts into two Celestion Heritage G12H30 75hz. Pre's are NOS Mullards, Guitar is Epi SG with 57 classic plus.

that is a nice video. when I here an Overdrive sounding like this, it makes me want to experiment with my OR120 circuit...

altho... the 6V6 tubes are quite a change. I would like to here the same tube setup running through some Fane speakers...or even Altec or EV speakers. If you changed to a pair of EL34's I think the overdrive characteristic would change a bit. Have you ever run the stock EL34 tubes in the amp?

Thanks!

I just started experimenting with 6V6's in January to see if they would survive the circuit after I modded the PT.
The GT EL34M's (my go-to EL34 with this amp) have a very forward-mid character but that's pretty unique to those tubes and the mullards they copied them from. If you go to other EL34's like the EL34B's or the SED winged C's, there really isn't a lot of difference from the 6V6's, I can just crank it easier with them. The NOS Mullard AX7's in the preamp, the Celestion heritage speakers, and the 57 classic plus pickup each make a much bigger difference than the 6V6's.

As for other mods, this amp also has:
- The LAR/MAR PPIMV mod
- The 90's tone stack was converted to the post-'74 schematic (basically one cap has been changed on the bass side of the baxandall).
- I changed the bright cap on the gain pot with a 150 pf, the 330 pf cap made all the clean tones too thin for my taste.
- I modded the power transformer using the 115-240 input taps so that it expects an input voltage of 125 instead of 115 (I get 124 out of my walls here), this brought all the internal voltages to within spec (most importably, 470vdc on the plates).

I'm too technologically stunted to do a video - plus I don't want anyone to expose me as the fraud I am on guitar. 8)

Well it took me awhile but i finally got it. Volume is extremely low so it sounds alittle thin to my ears. Pardon the playing....it was a quick and dirty video on my galaxy S3.
fiddled with bright switch and i dimed the gain near the end.

Very sounding clip! If that's thin sounding to you I'd like to hear it with some more juice! :jam:

Thnx guys! I say thin because that's basically preamp dirt. Once the master vol gets to the sweet spot it really becomes rich!
These circuits are very versatile and respond well to pick dynamics. Also those altec drivers add some bite.
More vids guys, lets keep goin!!

Is this the thing with the two tube rectifiers, or is this a separate build?

It used to be a locally made tube pa. From the 70's. Garnet and Traynor made some heavy duty stuff. I got the pa for a song and rebuilt the preamp circuit. Stock wiring, stock filter caps. Good platform for an Ormat and with only 2 el34's I can crank it more often :)
Dual recty wont be living for awhile...but rest assured clips properly recorded will come.
I think im addicted to building amps.
