Brown Super from 1961?

Postby dangonjim on Fri Mar 25, 2016 2:33 pm

Hello

It's been a long time since my last post.

I got recently an old fender Super. Some fellow put this fantastic fender amp for sale and I just couldn't help it. I gotta have it!.

Here in Europe brown fenders are so rare. I've seen no more than a dozen in my country. Problem is, there's no choice and usually these old amps have original missing parts.

This time I couldn't touch the Super before pulling the trigger. My bad!

Someone changed the speakers and output trannie. Both were replaced with early 70s parts (a couple of CTS alnico 10" speakers and what it seems like a 1973 bandmaster/vibrolux output transformer?).

Worst of all, someone also added two preamp valves!!!!!! This Super have Reverb (right now without the reverb tank but it works).

Don't know what to do. Get a new reverb tank and enjoy the Amp as it is or bring back the old layout to original specs... Maybe a couple of 10" alnico weber speakers...

What do you think? Any suggestions?

How much should be the value of this Amp?

Chassis serial number is 0423#

The good news is; whoever did the modification did not pilfer the original tone capacitors in the process!

If it sounds good now, leave it alone and enjoy the heck out of it. They didn't mess with the harmonic tremolo, did they?

Tremolo seems to work fine, maybe I was expecting a stronger effect. I tried the reverb with my vibrolux reverb tank. Sounded great.

I´m going to have a deep look and change filter caps, if needed.

I don't know. Took a look at the pics of my '62 Super and it's stamped "W-C". I assume it's a production / assembly line code of some sort.

You may get more intense Tremolo/Vibrato by swapping out the tube that creates the effect (3rd one in, if memory serves).

If the filter caps are original, they would most certainly be due for replacement. Whoever did the mods may have done that already?

Dave, thank you for your advice and fast answer.

If your Super Amp is from 1962, do you think that mine could well be from the same year?
