Strange Power Transformer in 67/68 Drip Edge Fender Showman

Postby TheGroke on Wed May 11, 2016 7:26 am

Hi,
I just purchased a drip edge black line silverface Fender Showman. It's got a few mysteries in it's guts that I'm hoping you can all help to clear up:

1) The serial number is A11303, which would seem to indicate 1967, but the ink stamp on the inside of the chassis is marked stamp on inside of chassis: I?0068 or I80068 or 1?0068 or 180068. This would seem to indicate 1968.

2) The guts and circuit look pretty blackface to me. And it has Blue caps and black electrolytics with white line.

3) The power transformer has two holes for the wires on the inside side of the chassis. Every Showman I have seen only has one hole for the wires. Mine looks similar to mid-70s Fender Twin Reverb power transformers. It is marked: L022756 CSA 827 -606-7-44. the 7-44 would seem to indicate end of 1967 (or end of 1977). Since the amp is an early drip edge, 1967 wouldn't be out of the question.

4) The choke is marked 022699 -606-7-44, which appears to be the correct model. It's interesting that the date code matches the power transformer. I suppose it is possible that if my power transformer is from the 1970s, they may have also replaced the choke using the same donor.

Questions: were L0... transformers only used in the 1970s? Is it possible that this is the original power transformer (and choke)? Or do they truly seem to be donors from a later amp? If they are donors, are they providing the correct power for my showman? I can't find any info on L022756 online.

Thanks in advance...

Those components, models and dates, appear to be correct for a late 1967 Showman.

Hi. Thanks. I did have one other person (on ebay) tell me that he has seen power transformers with two holes on the top - but I cannot find any other pictures online that show a 60s Fender with a two-hole transformer. Has anyone else actually seen this? I'm still curious...

Thanks DT

I have see them occasionally but do not know if it makes any difference. The model and date codes fit with your amp and that is what is most important. Does it look as if the solder joints or screw heads have been tampered with regarding the PT and connections?

HI. Sorry for the slow reply. It's just that, as far as I understand, my date codes could mean 67 or 77. This amp has definitley been worked on. The heater cabling has been redone and the amp has a newish looking artificial center tap like on this page http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/heater.html. I'm not going to be home until July 1, so I guess I need to wait to really look at it further...
