NAD - 6G6B Bassman. Two serial numbers from my other

Postby Porge on Wed Jan 25, 2017 2:54 am

So - a friend offers me a combo-ized Bassman, knowing my love for my other one.

After some guy shots, confirming an internal tapped international power transformer, and molded blue caps, proper OT I buy it even though he's never gotten on with it. I figure it'd be right. Get it today, and whilst having a look around to date it, I find the serial number on the chassis. It's BPXXX54. My other amp is BPXXX56!

My other amp has the dial selector for the international settings. Yet to fine-tooth comb the differences between the two, but how cool is that?

Transfo numbers, pots number are most useful for dating than chassis number.

You are right Naked Clark, I look at 5GB6 no 6GB6

Fender built 6G6B two years ; 1953,54....

A 6G6B will be '63 to '64. Full serial number, two digit tube chart date code (i.e. ME) and trannie manuf/date codes will help to confirm.

Guys - already had a handle on the dating. Given the closeness in serials, they're both completed in june '64 (based on tube chart of the one I've had for nearly 20 years), iron from 8th week of 1964.

Another odd piece of info - I paid $900au for each of them (about $678), but 18 years apart.

If only BPXXX55 turns out to be the Beatles 6G6-B bassman.... :D

I figured you had the build dates down. It is interesting that only one of them has the voltage dial installed. You would think that a run of export amps would be shipped with the same or similar features/components. Does it appear that BPxxx54 had the dial removed or was it never there?

Hey NC - never had a voltage selector.

These ones have a pre-wired selector inside. Shift the connector for different voltage. Having an interest in early international Fenders has made me look out for these quite a bit. I'd thought that the dial came into play around '63, and have seen amps as early as '62 with this style. I'd love to hear any other evidence on when the rotary dial came into play :). Whilst I don't think we've found a cut-off point for the different types of international amps, this points to at least some kind of barrier.
