Which 6V6 tubes?

Postby Dutch on Fri Oct 26, 2001 6:49 am

Hi,
Because of the constant increase in price of NOS tubes I've decided to buy some 6V6 duets for future use. The amps that I'm using them in are '59 Narrow Panel Tweed Deluxe, blackfaced Deluxe Reverb and a SF Princeton reverb. The ones I can buy are : Sylvania jan 6V6GT from '79, Philips 6V6GT and RCA jan 6V6GTY brown base from '51. All duets that I can buy are matched.
Which tubes would you choose fot these amps? Do these tubes differ very much in price?
Thanks,
Dutch

I like the RCA's for the momment.
I even have old used ones that are as strong as new( from FoMoCo, Delco radios).

in the tweed deluxe, I would recommend the brown base 6V6, or if you can find them, Tung Sol 6V6 or 5881 tubes. I got some of these really cool WWII era Tun Sol 6V6s that are in the coke bottle shaped glass, they look like shrunken KT66 tubes, they are awesome. for the other amps, I agree the Sylvanias are nice, but really any NOS US or euro tube will beat the pants off the Sovtek type stuff. Not all Sylvanias are Sylvania made, the '79 ones you mention may well have been made by GE or somebody, I don't know if Syl. was making a lot of tubes at that late stage of the game.
I've never been disappointed with any US made brown base 6V6. Hytron, Ken Rad, Tung Sol, RCA, GE, generically marked JAN surplus, Raytheon - they're all good, especially for tweed type amps.

I had a pair of Visseaux 6V6's in my Victoria Deluxe, they were the best sounding tubes I have ever heard, hard to find and expensive.

All the tubes you mentioned will sound good for your amps... way better than any Russian or Chinese product.
You might want to try and find some Mazda's... they aren't that hard to find, nor are they more expensive than the ones you mentioned... they do sound better. The Mazda tube is a killer 6V6.

The Mazda 6V6 is a great tube and can still be located at reasonable prices.

Thanks for all the help guys.
I've been searching the Internet for tubes in the Netherlands where I live and I've found a guy who has some nice tubes for sale.
This morning I went to visit him and within 10 minutes at his place I had TAS, yes TAS (tube acquisition syndrome). This guy has a lot of nice tubes like Mullards, Telefunkens, RCA etc. Can you imagine the feeling of looking at a lot of boxes with great NOS tubes whispering : take, take me....
To make a long story short, I bought a matched quad NOS RCA 6V6 gty from 1951, a matched quad of used RCA blackbase 6L6 GC (tested like new), and a NOS brownbase Mullard GZ34 rectifier. Maybe other guys have found better deals, but I had to pay him $175. I'll be visiting him again next month to buy some NOS GE 6V6 and he promised to look for some Telefunken EL34 and EL84.
Again, thanks for the info and support.
Dutch :)
