Brownface Super Amp Export model questions.....

Postby trulsux on Mon Sep 13, 2010 1:38 pm

Hello everyone,

Got this Super that someone modded with a spring reverb  , sounds pretty good but my plan is to get it back as original as possible ( the vibrato intensity
acts as the reverb control right now with a fixed vibratointensity)

Did the Export model come without a tube rectifier? Or was this removed when the mod was done?

If you see anything else missing in the pics please let me know ( I belive the O.T isn´t original either.....)

Cheers/

That (amateur) writing on the Tube Chart wasn't written by the factory. Brownface amps didn't have "Export" models , nor Blackface. They came later
with the Silverface.

That should be a stock 115v Model.

I have blackface Deluxe reverb that is an Export model- with the red rotary switch on the back but I have never seen those on a brownface.............

If you look at pic 2 there is an internal "powerselector" that sure looks original to me...............

AFAIK all brownface Supers were rectified via GZ34/5AR4, the only one of the original "five" 35-watt brown combos to be so equipped. Likewise I've never seen a factory "export model" Super......that one looks strictly like a DIY job.

I did look up the 68249 transformer and it is correct for this application. On the other hand the transformer in the picture does not have a 5v rectifier secondary that I can see. So the transformer that's in the amp is either a one-off or something that was added later on and has the old end bells added on.

Here's an interesting thread that may prove useful.

 Ah , I'd only ever seen Silverface with the Red Selector , obviously B.F. did come that way. I'd be almost positive Browns were too early
for Export Models.

Interesting indeed!

There's quite a bit of info in that thread -- much of it "un-discovered" (at least by me).

Thanks for sharing that.

I'm going to guess this was factory done, with the 68249 power tranny in there, as well as the writing on the tube chart.

Two Pre-CBS Super Reverbs with the same export transformer.
The one with the red selector is how it left Fender, the second amp had the selector removed.

I have a '64 cream bassman with the red selector. Pat sold a deluxe reverb recently via the forum.

If the Super is indeed factory export, it's the earliest one I've seen - have heard of a couple of brown vibroverbs here. The brown & earlier amps that came here (Australia) were fitted with stepdowns by the importer

Just for info, here in the UK I've owned personally a Brown Concert and a Brown Deluxe which both had the internal pins for voltage selection, just like the one pictured here in the Super and both had handrwitten "Export" on the tube chart. I've also seen a Brown Super here in the UK with the exact same configuration.

Nice amp.

That empty hole where the rectifier should be looks like it used to have something there, even if it was only a cover....

Good to know - I've always been interested in what Fender sold for an export market.
