Re: Sound City L/B100 MK III For Sale? PLEASE take a look

Hi Amperex--- i remember you-------- this one needs a lot of work:
1) orig preamp board missing---that's not an SC 100 Mk3 preamp board
2) amp really needs a total rebuild-- lots of "aftermarket wiring"
3) head cab smashed up
4) heat shield between output tubes and cap cans missing
5) most orig pots/knobs missing
6) power switch looks broken
7) Reverb In/Out loop is orig--- my stock 100 Mk3 has a working one
8] ID/ser # plate missing from back panel

here's my mostly stock L100 Mk3:

it's holding up one of my Hiwatt DR504 clones (mid 70's circuit) in one of the pics.
I like these L/B 100 Mk3 Sound City amps---- and i have most of the parts onhand to put it back in proper operating condition---- but it's going to take a lot of work.
i'm interested---- so please PM about price/shipping..................gldtp99

We don't seem to be very close in our estimations of the condition of this amp--- i see a trashed, old SC L100 Mk3---- orig preamp board gone, orig Mustard caps gone, most wiring all jacked up---- what preamp circuit is in there ? the butchered preamp board with the Orange drop caps.
And the head cab is in pieces------ missing many other orig parts that would be difficult/expensive to source.
I've got a new DR103-type head cab and new blank chassis sitting here that would be less work to produce a reliable, trustworthy amp:

i'll pass on the SC 100 Mk3---- good luck with it----- .............................gldtp99

to get the amp going all you'd need to do is re-wire the preamp and replace a few parts in the power section...most of the wiring aside from the preamp is correct...the rest is cosmetic, again how far you go with getting knobs, etc whatever if you wanna buy old mustard caps but there are good replacements alot cheaper...

for somebody who wants a player amp, thats the deal here...a complete restoration seems kind of rediculous to me

What tells you this? Looks not much like Hiwatt standard wiring. If it were in the UK, I'd be passing on it at any more than about £150.

from what I've been told/read the MK III L/B100 were designed when Dave reeves was at dallas arbiter, and these are essentially early hiwatts...correct me if I'm wrong

Dave Reeves designed (and built) most if not all of the Mk. I and Mk. II Sound City branded amps but the Mk. IIIs were in production after he had left Dallas Arbiter and Hiwatt was well established by this point. The circuit is based on the earlier designs that went before it but it is not the same as those or what became established as the standard Hiwatt 100 watt design. A good original Mk. III (like gldtp99's) is a great amp and comes very close to the Hiwatt sound but they are not Dave Reeves amps.
Too much gear for this little space here...

Hello everyone; I purchased the 100 from amperex, nice guy, and I am going to try and restore it. Watts audio has a template for the original turret board and I should see it soon. I will probably will be posting questions as this is my first attempt at amp repair/ restoration. Wish me luck. Fortunately I have another 100 to use as a reference. Stan :D :D

Very cool !! Watts will make you up a good preamp turret board----- they made some up for me several yrs ago and i'm glad they kept the info---i ended up going with a Hiwatt circuit in the two scratch built amps that were going to be 50 watt versions of L100 Mk3's.
good luck with the restoration and keep us informed !!! I believe that VHR has Hiwatt heat shields that will probably work---and maybe some other parts that might be handy : http://www.vintagehiwattrestorations.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_5
