You are right,
I have a better and closer look on the back and the baffle it is not original Fender built. It is a mod

Most vintage Fender Output Transformer can handle impedance mistmatch but I would return to original single speakers

My friend has owned this amp since 1960 and its not been modified from the time he got it. If it was modified it had to be between 1957 and 1960

Not even close.

That amp is not original as it sits. That speaker has been added. Also, there is a toggle switch that has been installed in the top of the chassis that is non-original. The value of the amp was compromised long ago.
that said, it needs to be serviced by an experienced tech and put into proper playing condition....fresh electrolytics, remove that non-original speaker and all associated components and wiring. Who knows what the switch is for...?stand by???...but that is the big hit on the value. No one likes a hole in the chrome chassis panel. IT is a player amp, and needs to be made 'correct', imho. Being a player amp and since it has a hole in the top of the chassis, one could install a line out jack there to run to the board or to a larger power amp.
IF they had not put that hole in the top of the chassis, that amp could have been made to be near original.....alas, that hole is worth a loss of $1700-2000.

OK so most likely an added speaker. Whoever modded it (if thats what happened) didn't simply cut another hole in the baffle as the original speaker would have been centered in the baffle. It would mean that someone got a new piece of plywood (baffle) and cut two new holes in it. I must say they did an exceptional job. The holes are cut perfectly. Regardless of anything, its a fantastic sounding amp.

Thanks everyone!

marvso.....this is not a 'most likely' thing. The amp is not original. And...to emphasize....the speaker/baffleboard thing is not the worst of it. That hole in the top panel of the chassis is an expensive thing. Without that hole there, one could get a replacement baffleboard and the value of the amp would be affected only somewhat. But....that hole for that non-original toggle switch is a huge hit on the value. It is now just a player amp no matter what one does......unless one were to strip the chassis, do a professional job filling that hole and then having the chassis rechromed. Then, you have to rescreen the print on the chassis....and reassemble the amp's electronics..... Not worth the trouble, imho and ime.....just play on.
To state the obvious in the vernacular....it is what it is, right?
