KT66's vs Drake OT

Postby DonnyMac on Fri Feb 02, 2007 4:22 pm

Hey!
I'm wanting to put a pair of KT66's in my JTM45 RI. It's got GT 6L6B's in it now. Can my original Drake 784-389 OT take it? A sexy new OT would be great, I'm sure, but can't splash out right now...

Thanks!

You can use KT-66's in that amp without any problems. A 6L6 and a KT-66 are basically the same valve and the primary impedance of that o/p tranny is made to work with 6L6/KT-66.
The KT-66 was the British version of a 6L6. These were designed and built originally in the Fifties when there was still a ban in the U.K. on importing U.S. goods. Marshall went to them because importing U.S. made 5881's was expensive and a reliable source was not always dependable. The KT-66 originally was a U.K. made valve and was in good supply and that's why Marshall went with them (until M.O.Valve raised their prices a few times). After the prices on them went way up is when Marshall went to EL-34's.

I just got a pair of GEC KT66's for my JTM45 RI. They sound great as you would expect. Pretty much as they have been described in the many post I've read here. More detail than the Valve Art KT's I had. Althou the VA KT66's sound very good themselves. You can expect more "chime" out of the KT's over the 6L6's you have.
