oddball OD120 from GC

Postby mercyy on Mon Jan 23, 2012 9:50 pm

I saw mention of this OD120 in the forum here and decided to take a leap of faith.
GC took $100 off the price and shipped it free saying I could return it locally within 30 days so I figured why not.
$1100 for a 90s reissue OD120 is a good deal I think, yes?
They did say it was squealing and there was no slave jack but did a great job of packing it anyway!
Well, I'll just attach some pics here and see what yall think...
It doesnt look a bit like a factory job- perfboard, alpha pots, new caps, ruby tubes.
It sounds crazy too- cleans up a bit but tone stack feels "non-orange" and the fuzz is even nastier than my Electric Amp.
I would appreciate any input as to what is going on here. Have a look....

RETURN!!

RETURN!!

RETURN!!!

That's not just a hack job, that's a basket case. That will never be worth the trouble (unless GC is willing to take about $1000 off the price).

I jammed on it for a couple of hours and was able to get some pretty cool sounds out of it but yeah-
It is not an OD120 at all- chinese marshall replica xfmrs, barely any OG parts.
GC gave me a refund but the clerk couldnt admit it was not an orange.
As I left, he said it was actually a vintage 70s unit and should have been priced $2500-$3000.
Beware chassis #960 yall! --Rob in Austin.

Well, if you were going off my initial recommendation in the other thread, I apologize for steering you wrong. That's the downside to GC's way of doing things, but the 30 day return policy definitely takes a lot of the risk out if it. Too bad that obviously 90s reissue chassis was populated with junk parts. I guess it's nice to know GC can be duped with salvage junk. I know where I'll dump my next abortion amp.

P.S. I love the super long screws on the transformers.

Haha, that's amazing. Like a box of components with an Orange sticker on it. But hey, handwired.

It makes me feel even more lucky with my ORST purchase from them last fall.

Of course Im disappointed to not have scored a decent OD120.
At least Im not out the $100 in gas it would have cost me round trip to check it out.
The upside is they honored their return policy and shipped it free so no loss anyway.
I wonder if this will again be relisted as an OD120? They said it was on the shelf for months.
I can only hope that everyone else that has interest in this head has a look inside.
cheers --Rob in Austin.

Unfortunately someone is going to end up with that turd. The only good thing is you can most likely make it back into an OD120, but it's honna be at least another $400 for parts.

I'd probably give em 5 or 6 hundie for it. If ya can do that and pick this up: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORANGE-Amplific ... _500wt_951

You'd be off to a good start.

If you did all the work yourself and picked up this transformer set, you'd be on your way, but you'd still have $1000 into it and I didn't see any evidence of a back panel. You'd still have an incomplete amp. That also assumes your time is worth nothing.
